The Best Gift of All

Two years ago I had a very memorable holiday season. I was nearing my fourth year of trying to conceive, and I was climbing the ladder of fertility options. I was at a point where I had few options left. I had just failed my last attempt of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

It had been an emotional and physical roller coaster for me, but I decided to try IVF once more. I refused to give up even though that felt like the easiest route.

In the beginning of December 2008, I finally received positive test results. I was pregnant! It was such a blessing for me.

That holiday season, I remember people asking what I might want for Christmas. For the first time I felt as if I needed nothing. Instead, I had a strong feeling of appreciation and thankfulness for what I had. Instead of thinking it would be nice to have luxury items, I found myself thinking of how fortunate I was to have had this experience.

I was thankful for the doctors and medical assistants. I saw them monthly on my journey and they involved me in decisions. If it weren't for Kaiser Permanente, I don't know that I would have had my son.
